Hand-knotted Persian carpets

Cultural heritage of the Orient in the West

Ziegler & Co. in the 19th century played a central role in the spread of Persian carpets from Central Persia (Markazi), including Soltanabad (Arak), Sarough, Farahan, Malayer, Kirman, Tabriz, Hamadan and Isfahan. These carpets, documented in the Carpet Museum of Tehran, were taken by the Swiss-British Company under Franz Theodor Strauss adapted to European market needs.

It is assumed that the contacts and orders in the carpet regions, especially in Farahan, by three influential politicians and ministers of the family Farahani were initiated: Ghaem Magham Farahani I (in office until his death in 1822/23), Qa'em-Maqam Farahani II (Minister until 1835) and Mirza Taghi Khan-e Farahani (Amir Kabir) (Prime Minister until 1851).

During his three trips to Europe (1873, 1878, 1889) he visited Naser al-Din Shah Qajar Countries like Germany, Belgium, England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and  Ottoman EmpireHe met personalities such as Queen Victoria, William I, Otto von Bismarck, Leopold II, Patrice de MacMahon, Vittorio Emanuele II and Franz Joseph I

A cultural highlight was the Persian March by Johann Strauss II , which was performed in Vienna in 1873 in honor of the Shah.

These connections show the key role of Farahan and its famous statesmen in promoting Persian carpet art and cultural exchange in the 19th century.
